| | Unwanted and Unloved In 2005 27% of the stray dogs brought to us were claimed by their owners, the remaining 2,899 dogs received by our homes were obviously unwanted and unloved by their previous owners. It is not surprising then, that many of the dogs we see are suffering some form of neglect or mistreatment, some minor, others extremely serious. Our staff will quickly assess the needs of each dog so that we can best help every one of these unfortunate animals. We rely heavily on the expertise of our veterinary surgeons and also the vast experience of our own staff to establish the treatment and needs of each dog. |

The most common forms of physical neglect seen are as follows:
- Untreated minor infections
- Malnourishment
- Dirty and matted fur
- Untreated growths
- Serious long term illness
Some of the mistreatment does not leave a visible scar but shows itself as aggressive, unpredictable behaviour that might make the dog a danger to other dogs and animals or to potential new owners. Unfortunately because of the extreme nature of the neglect suffered by some of the dogs received by Birmingham Dogs Home, it may be necessary for us to consider euthanasia (see our statement in the Rehoming section).
If you are interested in offering one of our dogs a home, please feel free to visit either of our homes, any day from Monday to Saturday between 11am and 4.45pm. You will be able to walk around at your leisure to see if we have a dog to suit you and your family. |
