| | Rehoming Procedure Birmingham Dogs Home operates a rehoming procedure that is designed to be both practical and fair. It takes into consideration the high number of dogs brought into our homes on a daily and weekly basis as well as our desire to find the best possible home for each individual dog in our care. | |
| The public are free to walk around our homes to view the dogs in our care. Not all dogs are available for rehoming as some are stray dogs due to be claimed by their owners, whilst others are under assessment by our staff for either medical or behavioural concerns. Birmingham Dogs Home will not rehome any dog that we know has bitten or is perceived to be a danger to staff or public alike.
Once you have spent time with one of our dogs and are satisfied that you would like to offer the dog a home, our rehoming staff will take you through the stages required to complete the process. No pressure is placed on anyone to offer a dog a home, and anyone considering this option must take as much time as necessary before deciding to reserve a dog in our care. Proof of identification will be required. |
| | | In most cases, Birmingham Dogs Home makes a charge for the rehoming of dogs. This charge will vary depending on age, condition and breed. Typically, the charges range from £58.75 - £94.00 (inc vat). In certain cases, a dog may be rehomed without charge. This may occur in cases of extreme age, ongoing medical treatment or excessive periods of stay within either home.
In all cases before a dog is rehomed, the following will be completed:
- Health assessment by our vet
- Behavioural assessment by our staff
- Home check/vet recommendation (new owners to us)
Any new owner will need to reserve a dog with a £10.00 fee, whilst the above is completed. Rehoming of stray dogs can only be done after a dog has been with us for 7 days, as required by law.
Deposits are non-refundable unless the dog is claimed by its current owner or the reserve is cancelled by the Home.
All normal rehoming (i.e. with a charge as above) will include the following:
- First part vaccination
- Three weeks to return the dog if unsuitable (no refund, only exchange)
- Three weeks free veterinary treatment (by our vet only)*
- Six weeks free pet insurance (dogs over 8 weeks old)
- Collar and lead
- Goody bag
- Introductory dog training offer
*Any dog rehomed without charge will not benefit from the three weeks free veterinary treatment
Birmingham Dogs Home makes every attempt to ensure a successful adoption but cannot guarantee any dogs temperament or health. |
| Birmingham Dogs Home Statement on Euthanasia Birmingham Dogs Home will never refuse to take in any stray dog brought to either of its homes. Because of this we see many dogs that are suffering, in distress or have serious behavioural problems. Some of these dogs are dangerous, others are in great physical distress caused by long term untreated illness. On arrival at our homes, the health and behaviour of all dogs is assessed by our veterinary surgeons and our experienced kennel staff. These assessments are designed to judge either the quality of life a dog may enjoy or the risk it may pose to potential new owners. |
| In cases where a dog is suffering, has the prospect of poor quality of life or is believed to be a danger to the public, then and only then is euthanasia considered. Any dog being assessed as suitable for rehoming will stay with us until a new home is found. Length of stay will never by itself be grounds for considering euthanasia.
