Rescue, Reunite and Rehome

Birmingham Dogs Home was founded in 1892 on land made available by the late Sir Alfred Gooch Bart, in New Canal Street, Birmingham. In 1987 we moved to New Bartholomew Street, with a grand opening by the Duchess of York. Since then this purpose-built building has provided shelter and protection for the stray dogs of the West Midlands. Able to house over 150 stray dogs in comfortable kennel blocks with adjacent facilities, the Birmingham Dogs Home has its own vets’ clinic, puppy unit and isolation unit.
We are a registered charity and for over 100 years it has been our mission to rescue, reunite and rehome stray, neglected and unwanted dogs from all over the West Midlands area. This vital work is only possible through the very generous support of the local community. This fantastic help has allowed us to improve our facilities and therefore our care for all these unfortunate dogs.Birmingham Dogs Home
In 2000 we acquired a run-down site in Coven, Wolverhampton and set to work designing and building a state-of-the-art stray dogs’ home. When we opened in September 2002, the facility, named Sunnyside Kennels, had cost over £2 million.

Sunnyside houses 100 stray dogs in first class accommodation, with a veterinary consulting room and an isolation unit for those dogs requiring special one to one care. Exercise facilities are in the form of a beautiful grassed area that both dogs and customers can walk around at their leisure. We believe that this site is one of the best purpose-built homes in the UK.

Both homes receive stray dogs Monday to Saturday, from local authority dog wardens and police stations. When capacity allows, we also try to help those people who are anxious to find a new home for their much loved pet, because they can simply no longer cope with a problem caused by a change of circumstances. We hope that by offering this service we can prevent dogs being turned out onto the street by people in desperate situations.

When all dogs arrive, they are aged, sexed and scanned for a micro-chip, then given a first part vaccination. All stray dogs by law have to remain with us for 7 full days before we can rehome them. This allows time for owners to claim their lost pets.
